Report of injuries and an overturned vehicle

WALL – Two people were injured in a crash in the southbound lanes of the Garden State Parkway, one was critically hurt.

Traffic was badly congested, three lanes of the highway were closed near Exit 98.

Police got the call about 3:15 p.m., according to New Jersey State Police Trooper Lawrence Peele.

State Police continue the investigation of an overturned truck on the Garden State Parkway southbound near milepost 96 in Wall Township Wednesday afternoon, March 30, 2016.

The driver of a flatbed truck took evasive action as traffic stopped in front of him, Peele said. The right side of the truck struck a guardrail, causing it to overturn. The driver was thrown from the truck and pinned under it.

Peele identified that driver as a 33-year-old man, withholding his name until police can notify his family. That driver was critically injured and flown by helicopter to Jersey Shore University Medical Center.

The flatbed portion of the truck separated during the crash and hit a Chevrolet pickup. The driver of that car was a 27-year-old man, he was taken by ambulance to the same hospital with a complaint of leg and back pain.

Police reopened the Garden State Parkway about 7 p.m.
