Two unrelated crashes on two New Jersey highways Wednesday morning resulted in one death and left four people injured, according to state police.
The crashes — one on Interstate 78 in Union Township, Hunterdon County, and the other on Interstate 287 in Somerset County — both occurred about 9 a.m.
On I-287 South, three people were in a Nissan Murano that veered off the side of highway into the woods near mile-marker 23.1 in Bedminster Township, state police said. An infant in the car was pronounced dead at the scene.
The other two occupants, a 42-year-old woman and a 13-year-old boy, were flown to Morristown Medical Center with undisclosed injuries, state police said. The three are believed to be related, though the woman was not the infant’s mother, authorities said.
About the same time on I-78 West, near mile-marker 15, a woman driving a Brinks armored truck lost control and hit the center median, state police said. The truck came to a stop under a bridge.
The driver suffered minor injuries, but a male passenger was flown to St. Luke’s University Hospital in Fountain Hill with severe injuries, state police said.
The highway was briefly closed as a helicopter landed to bring the man to the hospital.
All lanes on I-287 had reopened as of 3 p.m., state police reported.
The names of the people involved in both crashes were not immediately disclosed.
