TRENTON – A New Jersey State Police trooper from Glassboro died Thursday in an on-duty crash in Quinton, Salem County.
Trooper Eli McCarson, a 30-year-old newlywed and rookie trooper, was fatally injured when his patrol car hit a utility pole off Quinton-Alloway Road around 10:45 a.m., according to the State Police. No other vehicle was involved in the crash, which remains under investigation.
McCarson was pronounced dead shortly after noon at an area hospital.
According to his Facebook page, McCarson attended Rutgers University-Camden and was a graduate of Clearview Regional High School in Mullica Hill. He and his wife, Jordan, married in September, according to an online registry.
McCarson graduated from the State Police Academy in February and worked out of Woodstown Station in Salem County, the State Police said.
The State Police offered no other details and requested respect for the privacy of “McCarson’s family and the members of his station.”
“This is a tragic loss for us, made even worse during this holiday season,” said Col. Rick Fuentes, superintendent of the State Police. He said law enforcement officers “put their lives on the line every day to protect every member of the public.”
The State Police initially said McCarson was responding to a domestic dispute at the time of the accident. In fact, he had completed that call prior to the accident, the agency clarified Friday.
Two other troopers died in separate crashes earlier this year.
Glenny Almonte, 28, of Jersey City, died in an off-duty traffic accident on the New Jersey Turnpike on June 19. Anthony Raspa, 24, of Highland Park died May 30 when his patrol car struck a deer on Interstate 95 in Upper Freehold, Monmouth County.
Both Almonte and Raspa graduated from the State Police Academy in October 2013.
