UPDATE: All lanes of the highway have since reopened. More information is available here.
A fatal accident on the Garden State Parkway closed the road in Ocean County at the start of the Wednesday morning commute.
The road reopened around 9:15 a.m. on Wednesday morning.
New Jersey State Police spokesman Sgt. First Class Gregory Williams said a car drove into a tractor trailer and overturned on the southbound side just before Exit No. 90 for Route 549 in Brick, killing the driver of the car. Williams did not identify the driver or know the circumstances leading to the accident.
The crash closed the road around 5:30 a.m. The road remained closed for cleanup and investigation as of 8:30 a.m. Northbound traffic was slow with rubbernecking delays.
A second crash, in the same area of the Parkway on the North side, closed the northbound shoulder; it remained closed as of around 7:25 a.m. All lanes were reopened by 8 a.m.
New Jersey Fast Traffic’s Bob Williams said exiting the Parkway at Exit 98 for Route 34 southbound to Route 70 will be a good alternative route.
“The local roads will fill up with drivers looking to get around the closure,” Bob said.
