CORRECTIONS OFFICER, INMATE AND INMATE’S GIRLFRIEND CHARGED WITH DRUG DISTRIBUTION – AUGUST 16, 2018

On Wednesday, August 15, 2018, Officer Edwin Berrios, Jr. was found to be in possession of illegal drugs when he attempted to enter the Camden County Correctional Facility to begin his shift as a correction officer.   A search of Berrios, 22, of Pennsauken, prior to entering the jail revealed suspected Oxycodone pills and Suboxone strips hidden in his sock to be given to an inmate at the Facility.

The inmate, Dayshawn Nesmith, 21, of Camden, is in jail awaiting sentencing on unrelated charges. The inmate’s girlfriend, Markida Reevey, 22, of Camden, was also allegedly involved in this distribution scheme. She provided Officer Berrios with the drugs he attempted to smuggle into the jail.

Officer Berrios was immediately suspended from his position pending the continuation of the investigation into this case by the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office.

Mr. Berrios has been charged with two counts of Possession of a Controlled Dangerous Substance, two counts of Possession with Intent to Distribute a Controlled Dangerous Substance and Official Misconduct.   Ms. Reevey was charged with Conspiracy to Distribute a Controlled Dangerous Substance.  Mr. Nesmith was also charged with Conspiracy to Distribute a Controlled Dangerous Substance.  They are all scheduled for a first appearance on August 23, 2018.

All persons charged with criminal offenses are presumed to be innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
