KEARNY – A 64-year-old security guard was fatally struck by a switch truck last week, marking the 11th person to die on Hudson County roads in just two months.

Shazam Amin was crossing Jacobus Avenue — an industrial section just outside of Jersey City — just before 7 a.m. on Oct. 30 when he was struck by the vehicle, authorities said. He was brought to University Hospital where he died later that morning.

A careless driving summons was issued to the operator of the switch truck, but additional information about the driver was not immediately available. A switch truck, slightly smaller than a tractor trailer cab, switches out empty and full cargo containers for tractor trailers.

Amin, of North Bergen, worked for Cambridge Security for four years.

“A reliable, competent, and hard-working officer who was well-respected and appreciated by clients and colleagues alike, Officer Amin will be sincerely missed,” Dave Malefsky, executive vice president of the company said in a statement.

The crash marks the ninth fatal crash in Hudson County since September that have left 11 dead.

On Sept. 1, a husband and wife died when their motorcycle collided with a box truck on Route 440 in Jersey City.

Then on Sept. 26 a 59-year-old woman was killed when a hit-and-run driver crashed into a bus stop in North Bergen.

One day later, a woman was fatally struck on Routes 1 and 9 in Jersey City while walking to work. That same day, a 65-year-old man died after being airlifted from a wreck on the Turnpike in Secaucus.

On a Oct. 4, a Union City High School student died after his bicycle collided with a dump truck. Six days later a 73-year-old woman was struck in front of the courthouse in Jersey City when she went to pick up dinner.

Two Dickinson High School students on a bicycle were killed when they were struck by a hit-and-run driver in the Heights on Oct. 18. Ten days later an 8-year-old double-Dutch champion was fatally struck near the Grove Street PATH station.

There have been 22 people killed in 19 Hudson County fatal crashes this year.
