Driver crashes through train station in Woodcliff Lake

A late-afternoon car crash into the Woodcliff Lake Train Station Saturday left significant damage to the building.
According to authorities, a 17-year-old Hillsdale boy was driving across the causeway before 5 p.m. headed eastbound toward Broadway when he lost control of his vehicle and drove straight into the station building’s waiting area, located at the intersection of Broadway and Woodcliff Avenue.
Woodcliff Lake Police Chief Anthony Jannicelli said the boy, who is a newly-licensed driver, told police he had fallen asleep when he crossed into the westbound lane of traffic, hitting the Train Station instead of continuing onto Broadway into the bend where the train tracks meets the roadway.
There was no oncoming traffic and the boy was unharmed, police said.
The building was unoccupied at the time of the crash, Nancy Synder, senior director of public information and corporate communications at New Jersey Transit, said.
Both the Woodcliff Lake Volunteer Fire Department and the NJ Transit Police Department were at the scene. The Pascack Valley line rail service was not impacted by the accident, Synder said.
The boy was issued a summons for careless driving by the NJ Transit Authority.
Saturday’s accident wasn’t the first of its kind at the Woodcliff Lake Train Station. Jannicelli said about a decade ago, a Park Ridge resident had a similar accident at the scene while driving under the influence.
The estimated cost of the damages was not available at press time.
