2 pedestrians killed in crash on Route 22 west in Bridgewater

BRIDGEWATER – An investigation into a fatal crash near the Bridgewater Diner closed all lanes of westbound Route 22 from Interstate 287 north and Foothill and Ronson roads to Gaston Avenue on Thursday morning, according to township police.

Township police confirmed the accident happened at approximately 3:12 a.m. on Route 22 west near north Adamsville Road.

According to police, a 2004 Toyota Sienna struck a 29-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman walking in the left lane westbound Route 22.

Both pedestrians were pronounced dead at the scene, and the driver of the vehicle was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset in Somerville for injuries that were not life-threatening, police said.

The northbound Interstate 287 off-ramp (exit 14) onto Route 22 west was also closed as a result of the accident investigation. Bound Brook traffic coming from westbound Route 22 was diverted onto Ronson and Foothill roads.

Route 22 west and the ramp were reopened around 8:30 a.m. Delays of up to 1 mile on Route 22 were reported, as well as delays of up to 4 miles on northbound Interstate 287 to exit 14.

separate accident on eastbound Interstate 78 between the Bedminster and Readington border near exit 26 is also causing delays of up to 6 miles Thursday morning.

The crash is being investigated by the Bridgewater Township Police Department Traffic Safety Bureau ant the Somerset County Accident Reconstruction Team. Any witnesses are asked to contact Bridgewater Township Traffic Safety Officer Douglas Thorsen at 908-722-4111, ext. 4154.
